Addressing urgent needs today for a better tomorrow

United Way of Champaign County believes every community deserves to prosper. Together with our neighbors, we build resilient communities that are connected, supportive, and ready to respond to any challenge.

Being There When It Matters Most

United Way is there when our communities need us most. One of the most powerful ways that happens is through 211—a confidential, 24/7 call center available in 99% of the U.S. and across Canada. 211 connects people to locally available help, from housing and food assistance to mental health resources. In 2024 alone, 211 fielded 16.8 million requests for help in the U.S. The service is free, available in more than 180 languages, and plays a critical role in times of crisis.

Preparedness and Response

Preparedness is key to resilience. United Way coordinates resources at the national, state, and local levels to ensure communities are equipped before disaster strikes. We bring together trusted partners, local leaders, and volunteers to share knowledge and tools that strengthen communities long before an emergency.

When a crisis does occur—whether a hurricane, wildfire, or widespread power outage—the response begins immediately. With United Way present in tens of thousands of communities worldwide, we can act quickly. We mobilize partners, activate volunteers, and use trusted systems to get resources where they are needed most. In the first hours, that means food, clean water, and emergency shelter. In the United States and Canada, the 211 helpline works directly with emergency management teams to deliver real-time information and connect people with lifesaving services.

Recovery That Lasts

Long after the headlines fade, United Way continues to walk beside our neighbors. Because we are already part of the community, we don’t have to start from scratch—we build on existing relationships with schools, clinics, food banks, and other organizations that form the backbone of recovery.

Our work includes:

  • Helping families rebuild homes and reconnect to essential services.

  • Strengthening mental health supports so children and caregivers can heal.

  • Partnering to repair infrastructure and reinforce local networks people rely on daily.

Building for the Future

As recovery unfolds, United Way looks ahead. We work locally and listen closely to help communities prepare for what’s next. By investing in stronger systems, trusted networks, and proven strategies, we make sure Champaign County is ready to face future challenges—together.

Community resiliency means more than surviving a crisis. It means emerging stronger, more connected, and better prepared for tomorrow.
