Boost Early Childhood Development with the United Way Born Learning Trail

Did you know that 90% of a child’s brain is developed by age 5? Early learning plays a vital role in a child’s development—and it can happen anywhere, anytime. That’s why United Way created the Born Learning Trail—an interactive outdoor learning experience that turns everyday moments into powerful opportunities for early childhood education.

What is the Born Learning Trail?

The Born Learning Trail is a paved, family-friendly pathway designed to support early learning through play. Along the trail, you'll find colorful, engaging signs in English and Spanish with simple instructions for fun, educational games that help build language, literacy, and social-emotional skills.

Learn Through Play: Watch! Stop! Learn! Play!

The trail’s theme—Watch! Stop! Learn! Play!—encourages parents and caregivers to follow their child’s lead, spark curiosity, and reinforce learning through movement and interaction. It’s a simple way to make outdoor playtime both fun and educational.

Why Born Learning Trails Matter

Early childhood education is essential for lifelong success. Research shows that investing in early learning improves school readiness, boosts confidence, and reduces the risk of challenges later in life. That’s why United Way is investing in Early Grade Level Success, and the Born Learning Trail is a free, accessible tool for families to support their child’s growth. Explore a Born Learning Trail near you and discover how everyday experiences can lead to extraordinary learning.

Sponsor a Trail

Local companies, service clubs or groups are able to sponsor the installation of a new trail. Trail sponsorship is a commitment to the community. Each Born Learning Trail is a partnership between United Way, local groups, and municipal Park Districts or Recreation departments. This ensures the Trail is kept in good shape at all times.
