United Way of Champaign County Honors Dolly Parton's Legacy of Literacy
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL – United Way of Champaign County (UWCC) joins communities around the world in mourning the passing of Dolly Parton, whose extraordinary life touched generations through music, philanthropy, and an unwavering commitment to children and literacy.
While Dolly Parton will forever be remembered as one of the most beloved entertainers of her generation, her legacy extends far beyond the stage. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL), she turned her personal experience into a lifelong commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to discover the joy and power of reading.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was inspired by her father’s inability to read and write. Today, the program provides free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five in participating areas, regardless of their family’s income.
DPIL is possible thanks to community support. While Dolly Parton and the Dollywood Foundation cover administrative costs, United Way of Champaign County funds the books and postage for 3,483 local children in Champaign and Douglas Counties.
