United Way of Champaign County announces the upcoming retirement of President & CEO Sue Grey, who will step down following the organization’s Annual Meeting in March 2026. Sue’s decision marks the culmination of nearly 19 years of dedicated leadership at United Way and more than 38 years of service to the Champaign County community.

Since joining the team at United Way in June 2006, Sue has been a driving force behind United Way’s mission to improve lives and strengthen the community. A lifelong resident of Champaign, Sue has worked tirelessly to bring people and resources together to create meaningful, lasting change.

“Sue’s leadership has shaped United Way into a powerful, responsive force for good in Champaign County,” said United Way Board Chair Lisa Rector. “Her impact on our organization and our community is immeasurable, and we are deeply grateful for her vision, her compassion, and her unwavering commitment.”

Sue began her professional career at the Champaign Park District, where she developed a strong foundation in volunteer management and community programming. She later served as CEO of the Green Meadows Girl Scout Council before joining United Way, where she led the organization through a period of growth and innovation.

Beyond her role at United Way, Sue has remained actively engaged in the community. Her service includes five years on the Champaign Unit 4 School Board (two as Board President), involvement in Leadership Illinois, and contributions to many local organizations, including the Executive Club of Champaign County, Chapter HI of PEO, and the University of Illinois’ Board of Visitors for Applied Health Sciences.

Over the years, Sue’s commitment to leadership and service has earned her numerous accolades, including the Athena Award from the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, the East Central Illinois Girl Scout Council’s Woman of Distinction award, and recognition as an Outstanding Alumni of Centennial High School by the CU Schools Foundation.

“This work has been one of the greatest joys of my life,” said Sue. “I’m proud of what we’ve built together, and I know the mission will continue to grow in impact. United Way is in strong hands, and the future is bright for our community.”

A celebration honoring Sue’s remarkable career will take place in Spring 2026. Details will be announced at a later date.
