"Stranger Danger" Courses
In light of two separate incidents of child abduction in Champaign, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Champaign County and the American Red Cross Central Illinois Chapter have partnered to offer two classes on “Stranger Danger.”
The first class is geared toward Pre-Kindergarten-aged children, and will be at 6 p.m. Monday, September 17 at the Champaign Library, 200 W. Green St., Champaign. The second class is for ages 5 and older is at 6:30 p.m., the same evening. Kelly Formoso, Central Illinois Chapter volunteer and youth coordinator, will be the instructor.
The classes will teach young people about many topics relating to strangers including how to recognize a stranger, how they should react and behaviors they should watch for in strangers.
“One of the attempted abductions involved a child in our program said Eric Batsie, Community Partnership Manager of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Champaign County. “We felt it was urgent that we get involved to educate all area children about how they can protect themselves in these situations.
Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend with their children. The classes are free, but reservations are requested to ensure there is space for everyone. To reserve a space, call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 355-2227
