 Each year the United Way staff looks forward to October for several reasons: visiting with over 17,000 community members during workplace campaign presentations, the Campus Chairtable Fund Drive is in full swing, and the trees are putting on a show across the street at West Side Park.

October is also the month when the Emerging Community Leaders program's Team Projects come to fruition. This year's nine team projects invovle public events, collection drives and awareness campaigns. Through the Team Projects, the ECL class puts their new knowledge, diverse skillsets and collective strength together to make positive impact in the areas of Education, Health & Well-Being, Financial Stability and Community Basics. This year's projects are some of the best we've ever seen.

Here's some information about upcoming Team Project events:

HOME: Empower. Educate. Engage

Opening reception Friday, October 11  2013, 6pm-8pm, show open nightly, 6-8pm through Oct. 17

For one week, various items from local artists will be showcased and sold at Indi Go Artist Co-op in an effort to raise awareness in our community and financially support the Emergency Shelter for Homeless Families. Items include celebrity doodles, donated pieces, and artwork from children who have experienced homelessness.

Professional Clothing Drive at Urbana's Market at the Square

October 12, 2013, 7am-noon

The team will be collecting gently used professional clothing to benefit the Center for Women in Transition and the Transitions resale store.

"Prescription to Read" Virtual Book Drive

Ongoing through October 25, 2013

Join the ECL Kindergarten Readiness team in the "Prescription to Read" program! The team is hosting a virtual book drive to raise funds for books. Local health care providers will utilize the books during regular check ups to test for motor skills, shape and color recognition, and more. The child will then get to take the book home with a "prescription to read". Donate online to this effort.

"Treat" Yourself to a Book

October 30, 2013, 4-5pm, Douglass Branch Library

School-age children are invited to the Douglass Branch library for halloween fun! Volunteers from Clark-Lindsey Village and the RSVP program will be on hand to read with children, and each child will recieve a free book. There will also be a halloween bookmark creation station.
